We reviewed the first 3 commandments. We discussed why we keep the Lord’s Day holy. We shared personal experience of ever missed Sunday masses and why. Pointed out the fact that God wants us to be holy both when we are inside and outside of church.

CCD – Lent

This was the first Sunday after the snow storms, and happened to be the first Sunday of Lent. We went thru the special Lent section in the book from p.175 – p.176. Talked about Ash Wednesday, Lent, and the preparation that will lead us to Easter. Talked about sacrifices that people made during this season. Tried to get the point across that we don’t sacrifice for sacrifice’s sake, but for loving God and his people. Talked about the purpose of this 6 weeks is to prepare for Easter. For those of us who are already baptized to renew our promise made at the time of Baptism.

In short, we reviewed the purpose of Lent, which is to prepare and remind ourselves ‘be dead to sin but alive for God’.

CCD – Chapter 7 to 11

Hi , I am back The class has been trying to follow the textbook, one chapter each Sunday. We just finished Chapter 11 the last Sunday before the snow. Please take this time to review with your children.

At the end of each chapter is a page for review and homework. We usually do not have time to get to that in class, so I encourage parents to use that for review, and especially when praying and sharing together as a family.

extra – we talked about ‘the last 4 things’, i.e. Death, Judgement, Heaven, Hell. I only had about 5 min to spend on the topics, so did not go very deeply. I may cover the subject of our Salvation History, so this may be a start.

Please pray for DC same sex marriage bill, and also Health Care Reform, as these are the two recurring hot topics that our class has been reading from Catholic Standard these past several weeks, and your children should be familiar with them.

We did p.22 to p.23 together in class. Chapter 4 is the last one in Unit 1, and we did a quick overview of all 4 chapters. Please feel free to read p.26a – p.26c with your kids. Also, p.26d has activity idea that you may be interested in.

We read the Gospel reading of the day, and some of the children may bring the questions home and ask you parents of your opinion regarding the widow giving up all her possessions, whether this is what Jesus expect from us.
I tried to help them look at this Sunday’s reading by putting it in context with the previous two chapters in Mark, which we read in the past couple Sundays. Together, I wanted to show them the contrast between the widow and the rich young man who turned away sad when asked to give up all his possessions. In order to get their attention, I showed them a picture from a project called The Journeys, which portraits Jesus talking to the rich young man and his pretty woman in his red Ferrari. Your children may also come home and tell you about how I signed up for the US Catholic Advocacy Network website, and also how I sent 2 emails to my Maryland congressional representatives for support on issues 1) opposition to same sex marriage, and 2) Health Care reform. They were encouraged to discuss that with you at home, and possibly consider doing the same thing yourselves. You can use this as a vehicle to discuss with your children social justice issues, and actions that we can carry out as Catholic. linky

We read p.15 – p.18 together in class on Sunday. We also used a list of questions to help children internalizing the materials, which should have covered those on P.20. But please feel free to review Q1 – Q6 again with your children at your own time.

Please use bottom of p.20 as a guide to reflect and pray as a family.

When you read Catholic Standard with your kids, you can try to bring their attention to any social justice issues. I always try to mention briefly hot topics in class, such as same sex marriage, Health Care Reform, etc. I can’t go into great details as time is very limited so it would be up to each parents.

Just so you know we have been trying to touch on the topic of vocation, so you can consider bring that topic up in your family.

I was stuck in DC traffic and was late, so only had time to talk about priesthood & vocation, given today is World Priest Day. My plan for next few weeks is 1) to continue on with the book, 2) topic of ‘vocation’ given this is Year of the Priest, 3) Safety.

One homework theme of the CCD book is to pray together as a family, so I suppose you can try to repeat last week homework this week again, but instead by using different messages from this week readings for prayers and meditations. Remember the key is ‘less reading more praying’. Keep your readings/messages short and focused.

Homework 1

p.12 – have your child picked one of the four messages, and use it with their prayer
the purpose of this exercise is to reinforce the idea that God himself speaks to us in scripture, so please emphasize the importance of praying with the messages in your homework exercise as a family.
As a suggestion, you may want to do it in 4 steps: 1) Reading, 2) Meditation, 3) Pray, 4) Comtemplation. How much time you wanna spend on this exercise would depend on your child. My suggestion is to limit it to about 5 – 10 minutes. As they get more used to it, you can increase the duration as you see fit.
1) Reading – read the messages together as a group. The idea is to keep this step short and focused.
2) Meditation – ask each family member to keep quiet and think about the messages they just read. Use a pen to underline any word(s) that say about his/her own life, and also relationship with others.
3) Pray – what do I tell God after reflecting upon the Biblical text? ask each of your family member to write this down on a piece of paper.
4) Contemplation – stay in silence for a few more minutes. Try not to be distracted from any thoughts and let God speak to you.
(Optional) share with each other what you have experienced, such as what God told you during 4), and may be what God is telling you to do?

Read together as a family p.2 and p.8 of Christ Our Life.
Encourage your children to read Catholic Standard of this week. We usually review that quickly as a class to learn what is going on in our church and our lives.
Practice To the Guardian Angel, and also Grace before Meals. Our goal is to have these two memorized by the end of this year.
